That's how viruses work.
Viruses will die off of they're killing people. The more deadly they are, the less they can spread because it kills the host too quick. This is why Ebola is nastu but never gets more than a handful of people.
When a virus is less deadly, people are less likely to change their routine, stay home sick, or know they even have the virus. This let's the virus spread further, which ends up giving everyone partial immunity... leading to our seasonal viruses.
Remember, the flu actually kills young people. Influenza has evolved enough to keep alive which means it can't be too deadly.
If this virus isn't killing the young, and it's as deadly as their inflated numbers say, the virus is just a bad cold (coronaviruses are a large portion of viruses that cause the common cold)
