Throughout 1845 and 1846 an unaffiliated scientist named G.H Fitzgerald conducted experiments on potatoes affected by blight, the main cause of the famine . He decided to treat the potatoes with what wheat bunt was treated with at the time – a solution of bluestone copper sulphate and water . The potatoes remained healthy which caused Fitzgerald to conclude that blight was a fungus which could be contained and destroyed . His letters to the British authorities in Dublin were ignored.
