I don't know the truth. But does a botched face lift result in attaching the earlobes?
That seems to be the "rational" explanation, but I'm not buying it until I see clear examples of someone with unattached earlobes who definitely went for a face lift and ended up with attached ones.
Someone on reddit linked this photo of a botched face lift where the person has attached lobes. But there is no before image showing obviously unattached lobes.

He had plenty of time to recover from surgery while he was hiding instead of campaigning. The difference is notable but I see the same man. The ears were part of the stretch, and this is a common side effect or allowable change due to reconfiguring.
Perhaps you think he had a face lift on the left that wore off recently and began to sag back to his natural form...

Attached is recent, unattached while he was VP and throughout his life basically.
I don't know that they weren't photoshopped, but I deem it unlikely.
Why would they photoshop his lobes only, one way or the other?
The recent video footage is unlikely to have cgi attached lobes, and the unattached lobes of yore are unlikely to have been retroactively photoshopped for ... well, any reason that I can think of.
