There are tons of people on twitter who follow anyone even tangentially related to their interests, and politics is one of the biggest topics of discussion on twitter.

Tons of people just follow anyone remotely political. I'm sure there are conservatives who follow him so they can jump on him if he says something controversial. I doubt there are many bots. 500k isn't that big a number for a national figure.
