Definitely. It's why removing God is so important for the controllers. Humans will always look for an authority to guide them. Under Christianity, you look towards God and Jesus as an authority to live by. It's an individual's responsibility to strive to be as moral and perfect as Jesus Christ was. No one else can save you but yourself.

A void is left inside someone when God is removed. You start looking at the State and its institutions for authority. They teach that you are a worthless speck on a spinning ball flying through infinite emptiness. A mere germ that crawled out of the swamps and with nothing but luck and unfathomable time-frames were able to mutate into a conscious being. You are not divine; you are an accident of chaos. Or worst yet, a mistake.

Someone who knows they are divine and understands the strength of personal responsibility is harder to control than someone who thinks they are worthless and looks to the state for entitlements.
