Its interesting, every time I see these graphs they show the same thing, vaccines are useless. Here is a more recent version of this (1970s) - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/413067/
Which begs the question, if this has been known for so long, how is it that the myth of vaccine effectiveness has been so prevalent?
What the Mckinlay paper also shows is that infectious diseases dropped rapidly before any medical measures (treatments, vaccines, etc) were introduced. After the measures were introduced and widely adopted, the percentage of medical spending as a portion of GNP skyrocketed, with minimal if any effect on deaths from these diseases. Meanwhile deaths from chronic diseases increased quite a bit over this time period. So the medical measures do little for these chronic diseases which are lifestyle issues, and they do almost nothing for these infectious diseases which already were being eradicated by improved sanitation and living standards. So it seems from this data that there has been a massive campaign by the pharmaceutical companies enacted on doctors and the public to spread the myth that these treatments are effective. This has led to enormous profits with little (or perhaps even negative) overall impact on public health.
