Why would they use rockets when we have airplanes and an atmosphere that allows us to glide, given enough speed.
The rockets go up, then they have to curve because of very simple physics, because that's how space supposedly works (I realize that the case could be made for physics being a lie, but then it wouldn't be reproducible by people all around the globe (heh)).

Interesting theory. Back in the '60 Wernher von Braun originally wanted his rocket idea for sending cargo to different continents.
I can't find the exact clip he talks about it, but he did talk about it in the Walt Disney presents series.
