Can confirm the voice recordings have always been like that. Some also use letters instead of numbers. I've never heard them match the image.
This isn't to say that they don't have any use past being a secondary security measure...
yeah, I've used the audio captcha before, it's always been this creepy
it's done like this to avoid other "robots" to guess the audio captcha. they mix different audios (in this case sounds like people talking in the background), and then they spell the letters with a creepy (probably text-to-speech) voice just a little higher than the background, like in the clip
Having said that, the hypothesis of a massive hack is not far out, the start of the video made me wonder if they were trying to capture passwords massively or something like that.
