In 1982 a number of apartments became empty when elderly residents died. Trump turned this into a dual opportunity for good PR and a chance to make the existing tenants feel uncomfortable. He took out full-page ads offering to house homeless people, but the city declined because it thought he had ulterior motives. When a refugee charity suggested he house people from Poland, a Trump spokesperson said it was only available to people who “live in America now, not refugees.”
