It's a bit more complicated than that. There will be a cost benefit for obtaining more food. Having the stockpile might mean you can avoid taking a bad risk just because your family is starving.

I agree that just because you've got a stockpile doesn't mean you can sit on your laurels and wait for it all to blow over.
