What has the Papacy caused and why was it bad? How confident are you in the information that you've been taught or red on the period? Most of the critique the Catholic church gets is slander from its opponents at the time (protestants and Enlightenment secular humanists, so not exactly an unbiased account). People like Voltaire, Diderot and Jean-Jaques Rosseau pushed anti-Church propaganda and made up bs that is still parroted today. Meanwhile their secular friends brought about the most degenerate, demented and bloodthirsty reign Europe has seen during the French Revolution (during which the official religion was the cult of science/reason and the cult of nature) which set the standard for communist revolutions.

For the record I'm neither Catholic nor Protestant so both are not the true Church established by Christ and His apostles at Pentecost imo. Obviously I believe there is plenty of valid critique against the papacy but witch hunts, the Inquisition or "suppressing science" ain't one. I'll give you the crusades and the multiple wars waged by the Vatican though.
