One thing with this that some people feel better - elevated - by watching others go down or even taking them down. It explains many bullies, who secretly feel poorly about themselves but perk up when they attack someone, gaining apparent power. Many immature (kids) may feel unpowerful in life so they may feel happier when they bring someone down. When this gets reinforced over time, it produces assholes who know no other way to live. I interpret many liberals as being people with weak egos and no confidence in themselves, so they are motivated by jealousy when they see someone who is successful under their own power, so they want to see them fail.

I work on AIs understanding human behavior, and aim at building systems that can analyze situations for why they occur. But it is based on human psychology.
