Tesla comes to mind.

There are too many hype around Tesla. Just think a little - all "regular" Tesla inventions was replicated by amateurs without any porblem long time ago, even those that are just toys, like Tesla coil. But none of his "wonder" inventions, many like to talk about, was ever replicated, nor by scientists, nor by amateurs. Why everybody think, that if Tesla made some working invention, than all other his inventions should work? Many inventors who really invented something real, then fall into fakes and permanent attempts to find investors using fakes. Or just was not successfull in inventing something else, none of their other ideas work.

Fact that something was drawn on paper or patented does not mean that this is real and will work.

Also, it is pretty usual thing, when you have dozen of failed ideas per single working one.

I think Tesla history is heavily used to distract curious people with hands in right place from running on their own and forcing them to spend endless time for attempts to replicate things that was just failed ideas or even fraud.
