Try to find as old translation of New Testament as possible. You will find a lot of interesting things, especially small but important details that was omitted in later translations.

IDK if that is oldest one (seems not, f.e. in 5:47 should be about pagans, not publicans), but here is the point:

  1. Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
  2. But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

...

  1. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

...

  1. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
  2. And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

First, Jesus talk about denial of vengeance that was regular thing among jews at the time. Stop vendetta, do not take an eye for eye. And here comes important detail that was omitted later. He talk about smiting right cheek. Just imagine you smiting somebody in right cheek. If you right-handed, as most people, you will do it with right hand, and you could do it only with back of your hand. It's not a fight, it is insult. It is all about stopping vendetta and vengeance tradition among jews of distant past. Do not escalate conflict.

Next - the idea is simple. Be humane and respect even your enemy. There is no any achievement in respecting only your friends or relatives, you do it without effort in any case.

It's all about getting rid of revenge. Revenge gives a little but takes a lot.

As for the fighting evil and protection of yours - there are enough examples in New Testament, from the beating money-changers with scourge in jewish temple, to the highest virtue of fighting to death for your friends. And finally - I came not to send peace, but a sword. How do you think real Christian should use that sword? Hang it on the wall in a house as a feng shui decoration or for some more obvious purpose.

Do you know what St.Niclaus may be more known for you as Santa-Klaus did on one of Great Councils when some heretic tried to push his agenda? He literally punch him into face right before all Council effectively destroying his attempt to push narrative. And he is accounted and honored as Saint by all confessions.

New Testament is not about a obedience and sedation. It is about war with powers that be. You can't win that fight if you will be busy practicising eye for eye tradition with your neighbour.

It's a pity that jews, He was sent to, in attempt to bring to the reason the most degraded tribe at the time, didn't listen Him. And I find wise His proposal to pray for their poor souls while sharpening sword.

PS: The simple example of how you really on the same side with Jesus on that topic - Do you hate vaccinated as they hate us and wish them what they wish us? I think you are not. More probably you just pity them. Isn't that a right thing after all?
