Kind of. Really LPR/DPR is useless and huge money pit for both Ukraine and Russia. In past years region completely degraded and needs a lot of money to restore. Ukraine with its strong decline of Russian language will get nearly empty region without population, Russia wil get just another money pit in addition to Crimea. And unlike Crimea (with sea and beaches), nobody will want to stay or move in it.

We have same strange semistate of Pridnestrovie in exUSSR for nearly 30 years. It is still not recognized as independent state in the world, It is a thin strip of land between Moldova and Ukraine. Moldova insists that it is their territory, but there is a juridical casus - Moldova separated from USSR by denouncing legality of creating MoldavskayaSSR. And before the creation of MoldavskayaSSR Moldova had a border by Dnestr river. Eastern bank of Dnestr was added to MoldavskayaSSR, after its creation, but they denounced it. :) Ukraine never pretend on that territory. So Pridnestrovie separated from Moldova during USSR fall using that fuckup with borders and mostly on the ground of Russian language, since population was >90% Russian. Nobody ever care about this territory.
