It seems to be hybrid nano-organic technology, and that has no known good purpose related to protection against viruses.

Another possibility is that the 'roots' are light-emitting fibers used to communicate with nearby other nano devices. In this way these could be used to build up complex mechanisms made up of lots of nano building blocks. Power source would be thermal energy, not batteries as such and maybe not chemical energy since that would require 'food' or fuel. These appear to be nano blocks, not cells which would need food.
