Compare to how they treated Assange before the backlash. Or how they treat most legitimate whistle-blowers.

Speculative wise... They say the NSA was gathering Intel on CIA and Snowden was used to take them down a peg. Maybe not everyone at the NSA was happy with Obama?

NSA Dir. Michael Rogers did meet with Trump behind Obamas back and Trump certainly acted like he had proof Obama was spying on him.
