Yawn. Star forts became the rage with cannons in the 1700s through to World War 1 in the 1900s. With the advance of cannons and musketmen and grenadiers and calvary with guns the Star Fort offered the greatest defense upon placing cannons on it. It can fire from all sides maintaining defense against the cavalry charge and being flanked. Because the cannons and artillery in it cover the battlefield from all angles. So they were quickly adopted throughout Europe the last one built by Czar Nicholas in a Baltic state prior to the communist revolution. Famously Andrew Jackson stopped the British from similar defenses. But with the big Bertha in World War one, and the machine gun, flight, and automobiles, they sooner became obsolete overpowering most star forts like the one Czar Nicholas had just built. In Holland some have been turned into canals, where canals have later been added. It looks really nice beautiful and heritage.

No they weren't ancient power stations just massive defenses away from past castles as the battlefield changed. Changed with guns, grenades, ships, and artillery. They offered protection until the more powerful artillery famously the big Bertha of the Germans, flight and the automobile. But it wasn't until World War 2 that they were completely obsolete. The most famous one falling in WW1 but used again in WW2 and also falling.

WW2 saw proper flight, bombers, and automobiles, and the rocket. By then the Star Fort's static defense was absolutely obsolete.
