Jesus's ministry on Earth stands apart from all the rest. It was no Earthly ministry, or modern day chicanery. What Jesus demanded was radical transformation and that's exactly what the first Christians saw (and people to this day see).
It's wasn't simply "meditate this long", "do more good works" or "punish yourself for this long" to be saved. That is just a dog chasing its tail. It's the most important thing first, your spiritual allegiance to the Divine. For that first you need at least faith, and next you need to make that commitment fully.
