if you trace a straight line between sydney and santiago using the "measure distance" tool you will see it is following the curvature of the earth in that fashion.
the "detour" is only really 1,000km further south, rather than the "implied" 4,000km. this makes choosing preferrable winds more plausible
not saying this absolves this flight of SUSPICION. just pointing out what's going on
