I don't think they know what they are doing. I think their wealth has poisoned their minds and they view the world and the people within it as commodities. They are relying on people who more than likely are attracted to wealth devoid of character the real monsters. What I think people are failing to realize is these are not "warriors" or fighters these are people who pay people to commit violence. I don't know if you've ever met a mercenary they are terrible people with a single motivation, themselves. Imagine being a billionaire and you can't trust your own security because they're clearly lacking moral fiber if they work for a fuckin billionaire and they kill people for money and you've got a lot of money and no balls.
