That's sad. They were fed a steady diet of fear after living in a cocoon of illusory safety and they lack any sense of control over their own mortality which is a very hard thing to truly face. To know that you are here by the grace of God and to surrender to it is a very hard thing to do. Mental illness? Possibly but no more "mentally ill" than relying on a seatbelt or a parachute to open.
