1800s - I am not familiar with European wars, but there was a lot of issues and revolutions going on at the time.

Pope Pius IX started off being liberal and praised by London, Berlin, New York. He let the Jews out of the ghettos. Then he got red pilled by the actions of the leftists and became really conservative.

Pope Pius IX was the last King of the Papal states as all the states were basically taken from him.

Long story short - the laws in this theocracy were that Jews could not hire Catholics as nannies. But wealthy Jewish families continued to do so because they weren't allowed to work on the Sabbath etc. Another law was that Catholics could only be raised by Catholics.

A Catholic girl was a nanny for a Jewish boy who fell very ill so she baptized him. He survived but was now a Catholic so the Vatican had him taken away from his Jewish family.

Pope Pius IX must not have been politically savvy because he stepped into a hornet"s nest and worldwide newspapers and media turned against him after he adopted the kid. The media was like today....

Because a Jewish boy was converted and decided to become a priest, there were forces that punished Pius and took his kingdom. Worldwide opinion was against the Pope due to the newspapers.

Maybe you think the law was wrong but the Vatican was just following the standard law of the majority Catholic state.

He was controversial for ages because they called him antisemitic. When he became conservative he reinstated the Jewish Roman ghettos.

Pius, after losing control of the Papal States (most of modern Italy) in 1870 to the Kingdom of Italy refused to leave Vatican City, declaring himself a "prisoner of the Vatican".
