Unfortunately humans are just as stupid and gullible today :(
They were traveling magicians/charlatans, and fooled a great many for profit.
Houdini went on a crusade against them during the latter part of his life.
Because they learned nothing, these same mistakes and "studies" were repeated in the 70's. I highly recommend people to watch the documentary on "the amazing randi" to learn more about that.
