"History" is full of shit, written to create a narrative. Most of the dumb stuff you read about happened in a small segment of urban population, but they use it to project the idea that a dystopian technocracy is superior to the "dark ages" when man lived closer to nature.
Still, I agree it would be interesting to see what modern diagnostics you mention would make of the spirit world.
