That is just not true. Their paper "Control of electron currents with a 3-electrode crystal and as a model of a blocking layer." with description of their working prototype was published in 1938. https://sci-hub.se/10.1007/BF01342357

Simply saying "vacuum tubes got smaller"

Miniaturisation of vacuum tube even lead to creation of something like "vacuum tube ICs". USSR tried to produce some multilayer ceramic "chips", where vacuum tubes was made in layers of ceramic and metal. Tubes in that beast was only few millimeters in size. That is again, completely different line in electronics. And honestly, I think that for the interstellar spaceship that technology would be preferrable over semiconductors. Or may be some optical circuits. Semiconductors are cheap and compact, but suffer from cosmic rays and extreme temperatures. Vacuum tubes and optical circuits are much more tough.

There's the whole "silica as a semiconductor" thing which is why a prototype wasn't developed until 1947 or 48. You're just wrong on that.

Silicon is not the only semiconductor. First bipolar transistor was made in 1947 using germanium. First FET was made from potassium bromide (see above). Losev made his devices from zinc oxide. Silicon used as semiconductor in crystal detectors since 1910.

You can do it using technology. Just don't become its slave. People often worshipping technology, because they don't understand how it works. It looks like magic or miracle for them. Just don't be so dumb, learn how things work, and that's all, your humanity will stay with you. I think you don't pray to the hammer and don't sacrifice anything to spade. And they definitely don't interfere with your humanity. The same with other technologies/tools, even if they are complex.
