I don't believe that the planes were holographic. They looked more like poor CGI models that were rendered in after the fact (feed delay). Few eyewitness testimonies even mentioned a plane. Most people described it as an explosion. I'm deliberately disregarding the people who phoned into the radio/news media for obvious reasons. I'm talking raw footage of firefighters, police officers, news reporters (who clearly weren't aware of the narrative), and average people who, unambiguously, described what they saw and heard as an explosion. That isn't even taking into considerion the raw footage that's floating around that shows the towers exploding. But, as always, the media sank their teeth into the psyches of their captivated audience and labelled it a terrorist attack (a relatively alien concept to western society at the time). Once that narrative was set in stone people questioned the facts at their peril. American patriotism was still a big deal at the time so I'd imagine few people wanted to risk being labelled a traitor.
