Lol. Don't fret. I make it a habit to look up the history of old interesting phrases. Knowing where sayings come from gives an enlightened perspective on their real meaning.
Take "Bats in the Bellfry" for instance. In Europe they used to use castles in the winter to hunker everyone down in the winter. When they returned in the fall they would ring the chapel bell and a bunch of bats that end up nesting in them get stunned and fall to the ground flopping around. Someone used the term(probably in reference to a fur merchant :) to describe someone nutty as a fruitcake and it stuck.
Don't get stuck on us vs them. Everyone has their beliefs, and what they see as valid reasons for them. Being able to put yourself in their shoes to understand them is a pretty good skill to cultivate. Ask questions, be civil. They might be a pretty neat person despite their personal views.
