I was thinking there was some connection to the whole ItalyGate fiasco too. I hypothesised elements within the Vatican/Catholic church were rebelling/trying to expose corruption, and they were potentially being fenced-in/rounded-up. No proof, but with what is going on it seems it could be likely.
