Hanging yourself on a doorknob is literally prison shit. If you could afford a gun, why the fuck wouldn't you do that instead? More painless, more immediate, way more effective. When Carradine went to thailand 'seeking out information on secret societies' and died that way, I heard a lot of people say this was an erotic autoasphyxiation thing gone bad.
