I think it's likely his PTSD was triggered by some sort of abuse on board the ship in Haiti. What I've learned is those who have PTSD are highly susceptible to hypnosis. That seems to be the whole point to the abuse of children is to give them PTSD or DID so they can be controlled later in life. They can be hypnotized and programmed to do almost anything.
