Given that the ship was run by stupid pajeets, it wouldn't surprise me if the main generator had broken down a year ago and they kept sailing with just the emergency generator until it finally gave out.

The shipmaster was actually Ukrainian and there are inspections periodically.

I thought it was the pilot who was Ukrainian. And, if the inspection was done in India, I have no faith in it.
