The biggest distinguishing factor was the internet - pre-86 kids experienced the internet, but weren't on the internet until after high school (hence social IQs above 30). They retroactively applied the millennial label further back, starting in like 2010. Pre-86 kids and 86+ kids have less in common than Sub-Saharan Africans and Norwegians.
