viruses are supposed to be free-floating DNA strands. you can wash that off from your hands, but if they get inside your nose, it's game over for you. how does that make any sense?
if someone has some good sources on the nature DNA and how they discovered it, I'd be grateful for the link. from its history I only remember hearing that the double helix thing we associate with DNA basically "came in a dream" to the wife of the scientist who discovered it, and since she also happened to be a painter, in her infinite wisdom she decided to share her vision by painting it. that's science for you.
