I once read this huge dig that they use uranium to power the LHC. The author speculated that it was either a nuclear weapons program or they were laundering the uranium off to taboo places like North Korea and Iran. Sadly, this was many years ago and everything related to this theory, from the dig to the websites mentioning CERN's uranium needs have been scrubbed. It's the only explanation that ever rang true to me, though.
