Is Gold a safe heaven for your money?

Having read about the London gold fix recently i wonder why is gold (or anything for that matter) a safe place to put your faith in.

When a few bankers decide on the price twice daily (I call this manipulation) and the free markets (or me and you) have no say whatsoever whay are we so invested in it?

Please offer some input

1. Whats still valuable if the dollar crashes: Small denomination gold and silver, chocolate, liquor, cigarettes, bullets and skills
1. How you reduce your need for money: rainwater catcher and filter. Ground water, generator, off grid power, extensive garden, livestock.
1. reduce robberies during travel: hidden location for your real loot. For the robbers to take: fake gold and silver jewelry to wear. Wallet with low denomination dollars, and expired credit cards.
