Old schooler here. 59. Been in it since 1982. 80's and 90's were good times cruising the CT circuit. Arpanet was there, but info was still disseminated through symposiums,, lectures. Had to travel to learn. Great times.
Every technology has two sides, the potential to be used for good or for evil purposes. I think that the opening of information to everybody has not increased the general intelligence of the public, it has increased the abundance of information that was verbotten before, and increased its weight in the common sense content of the average person.
They are trying hard to use the internet as they used every other media before. But their strategy is backfiring, as the internet is not unidirectional. Its own nature makes it impossible to gatekeep, unless you go and destroy the media itself. The PTB are old, in age and mentality, and this is giving us a chance to win. Keep up the optimism! But do not forget that this is a long battle in an even longer war between the rulers and the ruled.
