Honestly with remote work the rate really should depend on supply and demand not "cost of living". This is a communist ideology divorced from market economics.
You have to learn to accept that most humans are sheep people. Imagine you're raising some type of animal on your farm. You do various things to and for them, for your benefit. Earth is that farm, and the human masses are the animals being bred and raised.
Also, it would blow my mind if anyone from this part of California moved to a place like Texas. We can see Texas on the weather maps, just as well as any other place.
Huge areas of California are 'unlivable' for various reasons. Death Valley is an obvious example, and a small taste of Texas here in California, but the Mexican agricultural regions will get you stabbed or shot, you'll hate life if you live in LA, and the bay area is expensive as hell, overcrowded, and full of diversity. There's a lot of wildfire territory for those who'd like to chance burning to death, Other parts of California are so prime that you can't find a better place in the continental US.
But I support the 'California is awful' meme because we need to lose at least 80% of the people already here. If people in other states are going to give the scorpion a ride across the river, that's on them.

Don't let them move there?

Same, even down to communities.
