I don't believe this is actually the case. Happy to be proven wrong but it is my understanding that if someone buys an NFT, whilst they own it, they do not have the rights to it. Those rights stay with the creator unless the creator explicitly signs over the copyright to the buyer. Without those rights, the owner couldn't sue for copyright infringement.
Anyway, I don't think it's financially viable. Think about the rate that memes are created. If someone yanks a useful one, 100 more will spring up that do the same job. It's a never ending battle.
Current state- I think this is accurate. However, think long term. NFTs built on top of other NFTs as layers of abstraction. Someone could conceivably own something as fundamental as a certain pixel color….
