Why go through the bogus exercise of showing millions or billions at all?
pretty sure its partly for marketing reasons (seems they can impress at least some folks with it). I am fairly confident they have that many results, as well as i am faily confident that most of those resulsts are useless garbage and not worth the query. It seems some people confusing search engines with some sort of "universal index" of the internet.

I'm not, glowie. When I search "COVID" I need more than 12 pages of results. I could be looking for a specific article of piece of information. The OP is correct. It's a fucking potemkin village.
I saw 2 videos on this the other day called Dead Internet Theory I'll link them below. But I came to the same conclusion the author did. Google is a trillion dollar company and they're essentially cooking the books to make themselves look more useful and important than they actually are.
Google enforces a hard limit of 1000 results on any search term. You can test this for yourself by altering the page URL parameters to include "&start=5000" or some other large number. You'll get this message:
Have you tried to use operators in your queries? You can get some pretty decent results. Although from my experience I usually end up having only a few pages of results.

That said, I think you're onto something when you say that the Internet is a Potemkin Village.
