This is what's going to happen with gas. The UK government (and many other countries I suspect) is going to be pushing air source heat pumps which are not suitable for many properties. People will look at the cost of expensive electricity compared to cheaper gas and say "no thanks" so the government will raise the price of gas to make the appearance of a level playing field to trick people into thinking electric heating isn't terrible.
Residential gas lines are cheap compared to other utilities. Hopefully people would think why not install it. It is considered a positive thing when looking at houses in the US because of the lower BTU price of natural gas because of hydraulic fracturing exploitation of shale gas. Everyone should be looking at the economics of it. Other options would have to be massive subsidized to be comparable here.
