It makes me think that the goal of Amazon never was to sell books.
I remember hearing about Amazon in the 90s. It was like everyone knew about it at once. It seemed odd at the time and now I think it's because carefully placed actors all over the country coordinated a viral "word of mouth" advertising campaign at once. It was crazy. We had bookstores with new books but people insisted on Amazon.
I remember in the 90s and 00s when people discussed being worried about the gov't obtaining lists of books individuals had loaned at their public library.
Then a great new service comes around that will deliver your book to your house for pennies on the suggested retail price for used books.
Good thing, they wouldn't have to use libraries anymore.
I remember when we got our first Wal-Marts in LA County and people were protesting because megacorporations were going to destroy small businesses and disrupt the entire financial ecosystem and the response to that was that we had like 80% of businesses that were small businesses so that would never happen.
