A great catastrophe struck an advanced civilization, forcing them to spread out and integrate with “primitives” who were far better suited for survival in this new post-catastrophe world. These remnants likely traded on their (seemingly) impossible knowledge - becoming the first in traditions of initiated “Wise Men” which likely persist to this day, for good and for ill.
