But likely there is a higher reason in how their overlords feed on human emotions so they need some livestock to parasite and make suffer. Don't think it's a stretch by now.

In the end machines are nice and all but you cannot claim superiority over a machine, you cannot make it suffer hierarchically.

The rulers need that to feel their own power. Without a real soul feeling that, would they really be the worthy inheritors, or operators, of the 'will of the gods'? Don't think so.

I also think it's pretty obvious they do feed on humans. You need some thinking they live free with lots of vit D to get the best food. Can't just stuff them all underground. It must be like commercial grade chicken to them.

Much like we need chicken for food so we keep em around. Can't go anywhere without meat after evolving on it. They may be developing, or have developed, a particular relationship with human meat if that's all they have been eating for a long generational time.
