Now what I would like to figure out is what the threshold is for Jews in power changing their names.
Are people like Howard and David Stern just so obviously Jewish that changing their name to fit in just doesn't work? Is Stern not recognizable as Jewish to begin with (I mean, it is a normal English word)?
Even weirder is people like Linda Cohn who is a Cohen, and just slightly alter their name to not be 100% obvious. (of course the Cohen family are the big dogs, from what I've heard).
Then of course you have the Bob Dylans and Jon Stewarts of the world, who really don't want to be seen as Jewish. I knew a guy who was a Bob Dylan fanatic and he actually believed Dylan was a Christian. Like a good Christian.
I REALLY don't think that people, in normal life, take it seriously when people talk about selling their soul and whatnot. These people outright tell you that they are evil, and relish it.
I remember hearing a Phish concert, and in it Trey Anastasio told an anecdote about appeasing a spirit that came to him by making a pentagram in the woods and putting food on points. There were elements of humor to the story, but things like that aren't happenstance.
