a) Being implies essence (interior) as opposed to abstract (exterior)...abstraction (inception towards death) generates essence (life).
Aether as "either" implies the division of abstract (cause) and essence (effect). Aether/aithēr/aidh - "to burn" implies cause burning effect aka loss generating the heat of growth.
b) Abstract WAS before essence can come into being. Only while divided from one another can essence suggest what aether IS.
Buried would be closer to reality than lost
How could a solid (life) be buried within a fluid (inception towards death)? It's fluid loss which brings forth solid growth, while growth (living) struggles to sustain self within loss (dying).
As for closer...that contradicts the essence of being divided from one another.
EN (within) ERGY (work) implies a distance from one another...not a closure.
