Common core education is a base line of educational practices meant to enable students to pass standardized testing. (And it's failing)
Common core was the first thing I thought of. If the data is across countries as the guy in the video says, then that does suggest that it is bigger than common core and that too many electronics has an impact too. But I 100% believe that the cratering math performance seen in the United States is driven by common core and the "new math" thing, even if digitization has an impact too.
As with most things it's a combo hit but yeah, whole thing is a mess and now you add in ai and it's a literal nightmare.. Brain melting
The stories the you see in the news these days are about students who largely grew up without AI but they did have common core and smartphones / social media. AI has now been somewhat widespread for about 3 years, so it has an impact but is not the major factor. The absolute cratering of attention spans, math skills, literacy, and whatever is mostly pre AI, especially for college kids up to a year or so ago.
Given how bad common core and smart phones / social media were for the current batch of 20 year olds, I can only imagine what the undergraduate classes will look like in another 10+ years. We won't be able to parody it. It will be that ridiculous.
