That doesn’t mean it came from a different rifle or caliber, it means the bullet jacket was too fragmented to be conclusive.
If you ever want to be depressed, look up how many people got falsely imprisoned on "100% conclusive, trust us guys" wink nudge FBI ballistics matches.
I saw one yesterday about fingerprinting. The dude says there's like 250 or 300 match sites on a fingerprint and to "verify identity" they need 6 to match.
