a) Alarm aka all'arme (to the arms) implies armament aka the implementation of suggested information into ones mind, which turns one against one another. Consenting to any suggestion implies taking a call to arms, which shapes conflicts of reason (war).
b) Surprise aka sur (over) prise (to take) implies a chosen one taking over ones choice if one consents to any suggestion aka if one gives self up by standing under (understanding) another.
There's the deception (please) added to the explanation (no alarms and no surprises)...pleasing/pleading implies seeking satisfaction which gives permission to another to overtake one.
Sleight of hand for satisfaction: "I can't get no satisfaction... 'cause I tried and I tried and I tried and I tried".
