Can the chute not stay open when approaching fifty?
Most likely not a speed issue, but flying too low over artificial structures who manipulate the natural wind above. The flimsy chute offers little resistance to quick changes of wind direction, and the weight attached to the chute just waits for the opportunity to fall down.
I've always been interested in doing this
Just don't underestimate the ground and fly a little higher to be able to react (counter navigation; entanglement; spare chute etc).
On the other hand...if you're interested in doing it like him, then consider adding a woo-hoo to your Macho Man elbow-drop impression.
